“Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game”

Every sport has a player that is larger than life.  Michael Jordan.  Wayne Gretzsky.  Serena Williams.  Tom Brady.  Mia Hamm.  Tiger Woods.  Jackie Joyner-Kersee.  I’m sure you knew the sport as soon as you read the name, because these athletes made their mark in both sports history and in American culture.

Babe Ruth is synonymous with baseball, just as his quote above is synonymous with life itself.  Time and time again we are faced with obstacles in our lives and must find the determination to overcome them and succeed.  In today’s blog post, I want to share some of the ways in which we can achieve our goals.

One of the most important skills is establishing a balanced calendar and making the most of your schedule.  Arizona State University has an informative website about improving time management, which provides ways to maximize your routine and improve your overall health.

Starting your day with exercise is another great way to get your body moving and your blood pumping, which increases oxygen flow and better brain function.  The ASU Fitness Complex has plenty of options to stay in shape.

Another important method to achieve your goals is to build and maintain a positive mindset.  I have always found myself to be a “half glass full” type of person.  Sure, many days don’t go the way that I planned them, but I truly believe that things happen for a reason, and that having a positive outlook opens the door to better things ahead.  There’s a video clip on TikTok of television host Steve Harvey talking about the importance of starting your day with gratitude:

Lastly, I want to touch upon the importance of opening up to your friends and family and asking for help when needed.  This topic hit very close to home this year, as my sister-in-law’s husband took his life.  This was a tragedy that may have been prevented had we seen the warning signs, or if he reached out for help with his struggles.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recently introduced 988 as a phone number for people seeking someone to talk to and help them through a difficult time.  The United States has one death by suicide every 11 minutes, and is the leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 34 years, according to the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration website.

By creating a healthy routine and having a positive mindset, by staying organized, and by accepting help from friends and family when needed, we can focus on achieving our dreams – no matter what they are – while not being afraid of striking out.
